Our good friend Rexsell “Rex” Hardy, Jr. posted a great video worth sharing. Get some insight on his take on what separates a professional from a hobbyist and how he was called to be a musician.

Rex Hardy, Jr. (Mary J. Blige, American Idol) – in his own words

Rex has been touring the world with R&B icon Mary J Blige for the past 9 years, and is in his second season as drummer for the American Idol house band. Rex has performed with numerous other artists (like Chaka Kahn, Kirk Franklin, and Ditty to name a few.) Rex still lives in his native Chicago, where he produces R&B and Hip-Hop tracks from his own studio.

From the outside looking in, he’s the strong-silent type–the kind who takes his time sizing up the situation and only shares his insight when asked. His demeanor and humility is often surprising once you’ve had the pleasure to watch him play. Those few of us who are privileged to know Rex personally know his die-hard work ethic, infectious jovial nature and his eagerness to give advice to those who might take his notes seriously.

Sure we have a soft spot–Rex was one of the very first touring drummers to give Woodshed head art a shot. “One look and I was hooked,” Rex commented. “From here on out, you’re the one.” We’ve supplied custom drum head logo artwork for each of his MJB tours and TV appearances, as well as American Idol house kits and several other artist he’s worked with since (including half-a-dozen custom-designs for his personal kits, too).

We made sure Rex was the first confirmed performer of our first ever Shedfest event here in Cleveland last June. After a blistering solo, Rex was quick to talk about the business side of the industry, an aspect many talented musicians often neglect. “To get ahead in this industry, you really have to excel at the business of music, too. They go hand-in-hand.”
